SUMMARY:CAHP Conference Workroom
DESCRIPTION:CAHP Workroom: Making Home Through Reuse and Retrofit\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis Workroom builds upon the CAHP report entitled Unlocking the Value of Existing Buildings\, and will examine how heritage conservation\, adaptive reuse\, and housing delivery work together in practice. \n\n\n\nThrough a site visit of a former warehouse turned into housing (including meeting the project stakeholders)\, and a follow-up facilitated discussion\, the workroom will explore the opportunities and challenges of converting existing and heritage buildings for multi-unit housing. Topics may include conservation principles\, code and accessibility considerations\, typical structural and design constraints\, energy performance and available financial supports. The Workroom will invite participants to explore and understand the details that can make adaptive reuse a success story for housing needs. \n\n\n\nThis year’s CAHP Workroom will feature speakers: \n\n\n\n\nJoe Mancini\, Cofounder of The Working Centre\n\n\n\nMiriam Altamiranda\, Associate and Project Manager for BNKC Architects\n\n\n\nZack Box\, Project Manager for Govan Brown & Associates Ltd.\n\n\n\nCraig Beattie\, CEO of Perimeter Developments\n\n\n\n\nWorkroom Highlights: \n\n\n\n\nMorning site visit of the Making Home Project.\n\n\n\nWorkroom session with targeted collaborative discussion topics\, roadmap\, next steps and conclusions.\n\n\n\nMorning coffee break and lunch included.\n\n\n\n\nAbout Making Home – 97 Victoria Street N: The project is the recipient of the Excellence in Conservation Award by the Ontario Heritage Trust. It is a former factory turned into 44 transitional housing units with supportive amenities. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDate and Time:\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThursday\, October 22 at 9am – 4pm in Kitchener\, ON \n\n\n\nHeld as part of the National Trust Conference in collaboration with the Canadian Association for Heritage Professionals (CAHP) and the Indigenous Heritage Circle (IHC). \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat to Expect:\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBegin the day with a coffee and a guided site tour of Making Home – 97 Victoria Street North. Following the tour\, take part in a participatory Workroom session at Crowne Plaza Kitchener.
