For Craig Beattie, the path to a career in heritage conservation began oddly enough as a labourer on a new build tract home development, where he had taken a summer job while studying at Queen's in Kingston. Craig worked closely with second and third generation masons whose passion and commitment to their craft helped to reframe his understanding of skilled trades and professionalism. In the years that followed, Craig completed the Heritage Masonry program at Algonquin College, and then joined an Ottawa-based team and was fortunate enough to work as a stonemason on some of Canada's most notable heritage buildings. In 2010 Craig formed Edgewater Stonemasons, a Kingston-based firm specializing in heritage masonry. Made up of a small group of dedicated professionals, Edgewater is focussed on restablishing high levels of craftsmanship through a commitment to best practices, and the use of traditional methods and materials.
