A team at EVOQ Architecture rehabilitated and expanded the historic Maisonneuve Branch of Montréal’s public library network receives an Award of Excellence in the Conservation: Architecture category. The repair and replacement of the building’s character-defining elements, along with the new additions triple the library’s floor area while maintaining the heritage fabric.

The rehabilitation of the Rockwood Academy by Giaimo Architects wins an Award of Merit in the Conservation: Architecture category for their work in restoring the building for future reuse. Commissioned by the Ontario Heritage Trust, the team at Giaimo Architects worked to restore the roof and chimney, perform masonry repair, and address surface deterioration throughout the building. They upgraded the building’s electrical systems to ready it for future programming.

ERA Architects Inc. restored and updated the Case Goods Warehouse and the 3rd floor of the Cannery Buildings in the Distillery District. The transformation of the historic structure into a functional and vibrant commercial space while maintaining the building’s architectural significance earns the project an Award of Merit in the Conservation: Architecture category.

The project completed by DFS Inc. to restore the facades of the TD Bank Building in Montréal is recognized with an Award of Merit in the Conservation: Architecture category. The team’s work to restore the limestone and sandstone masonry, as well as the rehabilitation of the cast-iron curtain wall and replacement of windows and doors, brings the building back to life. Reconstruction of the main cornice was also an important part of the work.

A project to restore and create an addition that wraps around the Old Post Office in Waterloo by Tacoma Engineers Inc., which is now a multifunctional building and urban space, receives an Award of Excellence in the Conservation: Engineering category. The careful integration of the addition compliments the existing structure using the same copper cladding on the roof caps of the modern addition.

The gateway monument which frames the entrance to the Sunnybrook Military Hospital, the Sunnybrook Cenotaph, was carefully restored and rehabilitated by ERA Architects Inc. in honour of the 75th anniversary of the memorial. The conservation work on the commemorative monument space receives an Award of Excellence in the Conservation: Landscape category.

A team at Clifford Restoration Limited restored the 505 Richmond – Water Works Building from a historic public utilities facility into a modern mixed-use facility while preserving the Art Déco style. The project earns an Award of Merit in the Conservation: Materials, Craftmanship, and Construction category for its protection of key elements of the structure like the limestone entries and steel windows, while integrating contemporary elements.

Restoration work by Capital Conservation Services, with Philip Hoad as general contractor (Robertson Restorations) and Johnathan Dee as engineer on the project (John G. Cooke & Associates) at Sainte-Marie Among the Hurons, wins an Award of Merit in the Conservation: Materials, Craftsmanship, and Construction category. The award recognizes the extensive work done to conserve and repair three 17th-century fireplaces after three centuries of neglect, which included: repointing, localized grouting, and stone resetting.

The project, on the initiative of the City of Gatineau, to create a modern inventory of heritage buildings in Gatineau built between 1940-80 earns an Award of Excellence in the Documentation and Planning category. Conducted by EVOQ Architecture and Cultural Spaces, the project involved the creation of online platform as well as over 160 inventory sheets and a comprehensive summary report. The inventory provides a better understanding of Gatineau’s Modern built heritage and encourages the conservation of the included historic buildings.

45 Sacré-Coeur – National Printing Bureau, completed by DMA Architects, receives an Award of Merit in the Planning and Documentation Category for its reuse of the building for offices of the Department of National Defense, Quality Engineering Test Establishment, and other tenants. The work to rehabilitate the base building and establish a new underground service centre retains the intact qualities of the architecture while responsive to the needs of its new occupants.

As Halton Hills comes under significant development pressure from urbanization, ERA Architects Inc. receives an Award of Merit for the clarity and coherence of their plan and recommendations for future growth of the region. Their work with the Manager of Heritage Planning and an interdepartmental team of municipal staff creates a strategy that integrates heritage conservation holistically with a range of municipal portfolios, including planning, economic development, and climate resiliency.

This project analyzed the adaptive reuse practices of all bricks and mortar craft breweries across Canada (1,017). It highlighted broad spatial patterns of breweries across the urban hierarchy (from small towns to large metropolitan areas) and the building locations from main street commercial to industrial sites. The research measured the overall adaptive reuse rate for the sector (86%) across all provinces and territories and highlighted a set of policies that municipalities can implement to encourage the retention of built form. The research is informed by the understanding that adaptive reuse (whether historic or contemporary) is a critical component of sustainable building practices, and that effective heritage conservation efforts require understanding of the potential benefits and value (social, economic, cultural, environmental) of transforming a historic building.

The project involved the creation and dissemination of educational workshops on stereotomy, a specialized carpentry technique, around the world since 2014. Patrick Moore’s initiative introduced a novel construction layout methodology to English-speaking regions. He has conducted over 60 in-person workshops, impacting close to 500 students directly and offering a comprehensive online course with over 175 registered students worldwide. The project’s scope included in-person workshops, comprehensive online courses, and collaborations with educational institutions. His conservation approach involves preserving and revitalizing the traditional French craft of stereotomy (Art du Trait), recognized by UNESCO, through hands- on instruction, curriculum development, and scholarly contributions. This project adheres to the safeguarding measures as outlined in UNESCO’s convention for the safeguarding of the intangible cultural heritage (Reference No. 00251). The project commenced in 2014 and continues to expand its reach, empowering crafts people and advancing the safeguard and conservation of heritage places.

In the words of the jury, Ms. Li’s research offers “a review of a wide sample of intervention in Toronto and contributes to the understanding of this phenomenon, offering some tools to better approach the topic.”
For almost 50 years, Christopher Borgal has dedicated himself to preserving the architectural gifts of the past. As a professional, volunteer, mentor, and citizen, he has combined a hands-on approach with years of experience, making a significant impact on heritage work ranging from Ontario’s front porches to Canada’s Parliament Hill. The Jury was unanimous in awarding him CAHP’s Lifetime Achievement Award.
