“COMMEMORATIONS” – 2017 Meeting of the Marion Dean Ross/Pacific Northwest Chapter – June 16-18, 2017.

 VICTORIA 2017

SAH MARION DEAN ROSS / PACIFIC NORTHWEST CHAPTER
ANNUAL CONFERENCE, VICTORIA, BRITISH COLUMBIA
JUNE 16-18, 2017

This year’s conference theme is “Commemorations.” According to the National Park Service, a commemorative property is important not for association with the event or person it memorializes, but for the significance it has acquired after its creation through age, tradition, or symbolic value.

Please join us in Victoria, B.C., June 16-18, 2017, to celebrate commemorations, especially the Canada 150 celebrations (1867-2017), the 100th anniversary of the US National Park System (2016), the 50th anniversary of the National Historic Preservation Act (2016), and the Parks Canada’s Centennial (2011). We will also be recognizing Victoria’s Centennial (1962) by reflecting on the on-going significance of Victoria’s 1965 Centennial Square.

A Call for Papers has been issued for the conference. Topics germane to the theme will be encouraged, but those covering any aspect of the built environment of the Pacific Northwest or beyond will be welcome. Abstracts will be blind peer-reviewed by the SAHMDR Review Committee. Details on how to submit a paper are in the Call for Papers. Submissions are due on or before March 15, 2017.

The preliminary conference program is now available. The preliminary program is not the final program, but it is fairly close. We plan to send out the final program in late April after the paper session speakers have been selected.

Our principal venue will be the Wentworth Villa, a new heritage museum focused on residential architecture. It is based in an 1863 house, at the time the largest residence in Victoria and possibly west of the Rockies.

We have reserved a discounted group of rooms at the Union Club for the conference. The Union Club will be our venue for the Saturday night banquet as well. For rate details, click this Union Club exclusive rate flyer. This is a great opportunity to immerse yourselves in historic Victoria! For those who would like to consider alternative accommodations, there will be hotels and B&Bs listed in the Conference Program when it comes out.

Note that there was no SAH MDR conference in 2016. Attendees of the 2015 conference in Ashland will automatically have their membership renewed and extended to the June 2017 conference in Victoria.

All of our past conference documents are stored in the University of Oregon archives. However, since 1999, we have been saving our past conference programs and reports on our website. Photos since our 2011 conference are stored on our Flickr account. If you have photos you would like to share, send them to the contact email address below and we will post them with full credit due.
