2015 Award of Excellence – Conservation Projects – Engineering

Basilica of Our Lady Immaculate

Basilica of Our Lady Immaculate is an impressive limestone structure constructed c. 1870 in the High Victorian Gothic Revival style. This Guelph landmark has been designated as a National Historic Site. Over the past 8 years, Tacoma Engineers, serving as Prime Consultant and Structural Engineer, has led a team of experts for the church’s multi-phase multi-year conservation program. Throughout the project, the church has remained in full operation.

The conservation of Basilica of Our Lady is a project that has spanned 8 years from the initial development of the Conservation Plan in 2008 through the completion of the interior work in 2014. A holistic team of conservation experts was required to successfully complete this project – structural stabilization, masonry conservation, roofing, wood, stained glass, floor and wall finishes. Following the Standards and Guidelines for the Conservation of Historic Places in Canada ensured that the principles of understand, plan, use and intervene / implement, were held central to all phases of the project.
